Central Government Eases Drone Ownership Rules by Accepting Alternative IDs.
23 August 2024
The Central Government has amended the Drone Rules, 2021, to facilitate easier access to drone operations and ownership. This follows a recent initiative announced by the Prime Minister to support women’s self-help groups in operating and repairing drones. Previously, the Drone Rules required individuals to have an Indian Passport for drone registration and transfer. However, due to consultations with various ministries and stakeholders, this requirement has been relaxed.
Under the new rules:
1. Registration (Form D-2) and Transfer (Form D-3) forms will now accept alternative proofs of identity and address—such as Voter’s ID, Ration Card, or Driving License—in place of the Indian Passport.
2. These amendments are aimed at easing the process for new drone owners and increasing drone usage in public services.
The amendments take effect immediately upon publication in the Official Gazette.
