Public Interest Litigation >> Constitution & Law Procedure
In an ongoing court case regarding the demolition of houses in Nagaon, Assam, the state government has informed the Gauhati High Court that compensation has been paid to six individuals who lost their homes in the incident.
The case stems from a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed after the demolition drive. Mr. D. Nath, representing the Assam government, submitted documents showing compensation disbursement. However, compensation for the family of Safiqul Islam, who died during the demolition, is on hold due to the lack of a "Next of Kin" certificate. The government has assured the court that compensation will be provided upon receiving the necessary documentation.
Furthermore, Mr. Nath requested a four-week extension to update the court on actions taken against officials responsible for the unauthorized demolition. The court granted the request.
The petitioner's lawyer was also granted time to file a rejoinder to the government's counter-affidavit. The next hearing is scheduled for June 26, 2024.
