A high-stakes court battle over a student's Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) score has come to a close. The dispute hinged on the legitimacy of two entirely different response sheets and score cards received by the petitioner. This exam, crucial for securing admission into prestigious Indian engineering institutions, became the battleground for a fight over a student's academic future.
The petitioner claimed the first response sheet and score card, downloaded in February, reflected their accurate and high percentile (99.8493935). They argued the second set, downloaded shortly after, with a lower percentile (74.5733907), was fabricated.
The National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers the JEE, countered the claim. They argued both the first response sheet and score card were fabricated and the second set was accurate. The NTA emphasized the security measures in place to prevent manipulation during the exam.
The court acknowledged the importance of the case for the petitioner's academic future. However, due to conflicting evidence, the court couldn't definitively determine the validity of either response sheet. The petitioner's argument to re-arrange answer choices for evaluation was rejected due to lack of supporting evidence. Additionally, the court found it improbable that the NTA would mistakenly issue two sets of credentials.
Ultimately, the court concluded that the petitioner failed to present a strong enough case (prima facie) to warrant further investigation under its jurisdiction. The petition was dismissed with no costs awarded.
While the case is closed, it highlights the importance of secure testing procedures and the challenges in resolving such disputes when evidence is unclear.
