New TRAI Guidelines Open Up Tera Hertz Spectrum for Experimental Use.

21 August 2024
On August 22, 2024, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued recommendations concerning the Tera Hertz (THz) spectrum. This initiative follows a request from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to explore open and de-licensed usage of unused spectrum bands in the THz range for limited periods.

Key aspects of the TRAI recommendations include:

1. Introduction of Tera Hertz Experimental Authorisation (THEA): This new authorization will facilitate research, testing, technology trials, and demonstrations within the 95 GHz to 3 THz range. It will also allow for the sale of experimental devices operating in this spectrum.
2. Eligibility and Duration: Various Indian entities such as academic institutions, R&D labs, government bodies, and telecom providers are eligible for THEA. The authorization will be valid for up to five years, with the possibility of extension for additional five-year periods. The fee for THEA is set at Rs. 1,000.
3. Frequency Bands: The TRAI recommends allowing authorisation and assignment-exempt use of specific frequency bands: 116-123 GHz, 174.8-182 GHz, 185-190 GHz, and 244-246 GHz. Additionally, the 77-81 GHz band should be opened for automotive radar systems.
4. Impact on Industry: These measures are expected to boost innovation in THz technologies and support the 'Make in India' initiative. The new spectrum use regulations will enhance next-generation wireless technologies and vehicle safety through advanced radar applications.
