The Delhi High Court recently issued an order on a petition seeking improved care for senior citizens in the city. The petition, filed on behalf of the elderly population, highlighted a lack of resources and urged the government to take action.

The petition called for a comprehensive door-to-door survey to determine the exact number of senior citizens residing in Delhi. This data would be crucial in planning for their well-being. Additionally, the petition requested the construction of a new senior citizen home in each of Delhi's districts, significantly increasing accessibility to care facilities. Finally, it emphasized the need for the Delhi Police to maintain separate data on crimes committed against senior citizens, allowing for better identification and prevention of such offenses.

The petitioner argued that there is a current shortage of senior citizen homes, leaving many elderly individuals without proper support. They further contended that many senior citizens face neglect and discrimination within their own families, highlighting the need for dedicated care options. The petition also pointed out potential violations of the Senior Citizen Act, 2007, by the Delhi government.

The court, acknowledging the importance of the issues raised, opted for a different course of action than a formal hearing. The petition itself was directed to be treated as a formal representation to the Chief Secretary of Delhi. This essentially elevates the petition to a level requiring an official response from the government. The Chief Secretary is mandated to review the complaint and deliver a decision within 12 weeks of the court order.

While not a final judgment, this court order compels the Delhi government to address the concerns regarding senior citizen care. The Chief Secretary's response will be crucial in determining the next steps towards ensuring the well-being of Delhi's elderly population.
