Parched Delhi Seeks More Water, Awaits UYRB Decision in Yamuna Dispute.

Delhi residents facing a water crisis are locked in a dispute with neighboring states over the sharing of Yamuna river water. The capital city blames Haryana for not releasing its fair share of water, leading to a shortage.

Delhi argues they urgently need an additional 150 cusecs of water to meet their current drinking water demands. Initially, Himachal Pradesh offered surplus water they could release, but later retracted their statement. Haryana, on the other hand, maintains they are already releasing the agreed-upon amount as per a 1994 agreement and have no surplus to share.

All parties involved acknowledge the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) as the designated body to handle water sharing disputes. The UYRB is a consortium formed by the concerned states to manage the Yamuna River.

Recognizing their own limitations in such a complex issue, the Court deferred to the expertise of the UYRB. The court directed Delhi to submit a formal request to the UYRB for the additional water they require. The UYRB has been instructed to convene a meeting to deliberate on Delhi's request and reach a decision as soon as possible.

This decision by the Court paves the way for the UYRB to play a crucial role in resolving the water crisis in Delhi. Whether an amicable solution is reached or tensions flare, the coming days will be crucial for Delhi's water security.
