Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas: A Tribute to Democracy and Sacrifice.

13 July 2024

On June 25, 1975, India experienced a significant turning point in its democratic journey with the declaration of a national Emergency. This period was marked by extensive abuses of power by the government, resulting in widespread suffering and repression among the Indian populace. In recognition of this dark chapter in history, the Government of India has declared June 25 as “Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas” (??????? ????? ????), a day to honour those who endured and fought against the excesses of that era.

The Emergency, lasting from 1975 to 1977, was characterized by the suspension of civil liberties, censorship of the press, and the curtailment of democratic rights. Many individuals were imprisoned without trial, and the fundamental principles enshrined in the Constitution were undermined. This period serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of democracy and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding it.

The declaration of Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas is not only a tribute to the courage of those who resisted oppression but also a reaffirmation of the Indian people's enduring faith in their Constitution and democracy. It symbolizes a collective commitment to never allow such gross abuses of power to occur again.

As we observe this day, it is essential to reflect on the lessons learned from the past. The Government of India encourages citizens to engage in discussions about democracy, civil rights, and the importance of upholding constitutional values. By remembering the sacrifices made during the Emergency, we strengthen our resolve to protect the rights and freedoms guaranteed to every Indian.

Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience of India's democracy and the ongoing responsibility of its citizens to uphold the rule of law and protect democratic institutions. Let us honour those who suffered and recommit ourselves to ensuring that the abuses of power witnessed in the past are never repeated in the future.
