Supreme Court Grants Bail to Arvind Kumar Singh After Over Seven Years in Jail.

10 October 2025
The Supreme Court of India has put aside a Jharkhand High Court order refusing bail to Arvind Kumar Singh, releasing him on terms to be determined by the trial court subject to the finalization of his criminal appeal.

A two-judge bench headed by Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice R. Mahadevan issued the order on October 10, 2025, in Criminal Appeal No. 4437 of 2025. The case is based on Singh's appeal against the November 21, 2024, order of the High Court rejecting his request to suspend his sentence pending his appeal in Criminal Appeal (DB) No. 747 of 2019.

Singh has been under detention for almost seven years and six months in relation to Sessions Trial No. 247 of 2018 before the Additional Sessions Judge-II, Bokaro. Considering the undue detention and considering the nature of the offence ascribed to the accused, the Supreme Court held that the case of the appellant called for interference.

The Court directed the trial court to suspend with immediate effect its sentence, mandating Singh's production before the trial court for release on bail as it deems fit. The bench also asked the Jharkhand High Court to hasten hearing of the pending appeal, threatening to cancel the bail if Singh abuses his freedom or does not comply with court proceedings.

By reserving the impugned order of the High Court, the Supreme Court reiterated its doctrine of weighing the rights of accused persons against the needs of justice when such appeals linger undecided for extended periods of custody.
