The Supreme Court of India has revived a legal battle regarding the employment status of former Majarewadi Gram Panchayat workers who are now part of the Solapur Municipal Corporation.
The dispute centers on whether these workers were regular employees before the merger of several gram panchayats, including Majarewadi, with the Solapur Municipal Corporation in 1992. Regular employee status would entitle them to certain benefits.
The High Court had previously ruled in favor of the workers, but the Solapur Municipal Corporation appealed to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court's decision focused on new documents presented by the workers that the High Court hadn't considered. Because of these new documents, the Supreme Court remanded the case back to the High Court for a fresh review.
Both the Solapur Municipal Corporation and the workers will now have the opportunity to submit additional evidence to support their cases.
The Supreme Court emphasized the urgency of resolving this long-standing legal matter and requested the High Court to prioritize the case for a speedy conclusion.
